To answer the OP, no I do not believe the Scrake to be a reference to Resident Evil. It takes a bit of time to set up, but when it works I find it very satisfying. If the demo misses, there is a high chance he is going to be cut in half. I believe that Demo did not have the same skill set it does today, so it wasn't quite as effective as it is now. Tripwire remedied this with the RPG dud shot, a high risk, high reward method that gave demo a better option of dealing with this high tier threat.
